Notifications on Windows phone 8.1

How about a swipe up from the bottom? I have a 920 and trying to reach the top of the screen can be tough.

Wouldn't that make you hit the capacitive buttons all the time?

Left side swipe. The less like Android and iOS (webOS *ahem*) the better. It's more natural to the UI language and will work in any app.

Left side swipe would work on the home screen but not in most apps you are in because they already have left swipes that do other things. Swipe form the top would work better from home screen and any app.

I vote for a pull down from the top, but they should change it just a tad from the way Android/iOS handle it. In Android/iOS the notification shutter overlays whatever is currently on your screen. I read a comment somewhere here on WPCentral (can't remember which user) that suggested that pulling down the notification centre should slide whatever your current screen is down and out of the way (exactly like the animation for swiping from the start screen to the app list). IMO this would make the notification centre feel more like part of the OS since we already have animations like that for swiping horizontally.

Also, pulling down the notification centre will feel more natural to new users coming from either iOS or Android.

I wouldn't be opposed to this. And it makes sense since MS put the IE address bar on the bottom for the same reason.

I'm not a huge fan of any motion requiring you to reach to the top of the phone's screen to get to the notification center given the ever increasing size of phones. And as others noted swiping from the sides would possibly accidentally trigger the panorama. So I think I'm in the hold the home button, remap voice controls to the search button.

What would make the hold the home button better IMO is if they used the backlighting on the home as a notification indicator when the phone's screen is off. It would solve the notification led requests, and would help guide users to the long press for notifications.

I very much agree. Best idea I've heard yet and would fit in with the metro UI.

Reach down from the top doesnt go at all with Windows metro UI so I hope they dont do that...
I do like the long press window buttom, and moving voice to long press search buttom though! but as they mentioned before..constantly holding down a buttom might get annoying for something you'll be checking on all the time

Lets think a little more out of the box (or more windows centric)...how about having our notification integrated with the People Hub? or a better version of the 'Me' tile (thats where we get our notification anyways)? Or maybe create a 'App Hub'?

Top info bar needs to be available 100% of the time and not disappear. Then you can tap or slide it down to show a notification list.
Have it act like those task bars at the bottom of the screen with the three dot drawers (like in IE and other programs)
So you tap or drag down a black screen that at maximum covers half the screen, and then you can scroll through the notifications on the list.

There, now its WP centric (its just the same as the three dot drawers, just from top down instead of down up) and familiar with the other OS's (slide from top)

How about a live tile with a beeper?
- Where you could include/exclude the apps you want notification for.
- Vary the time between the beeps. (1 min,30 secs)
- Have a lock screen support.
- Tap the notification after accessing the tile to access the app.

Pulling dragging is old. WP is new and should show some new way to do it. Whats the use of a new OS when you want to do the same thing. I just want it to be something fresh like wp8 is.

Brainstom!!! Use the accelerometer built into the device. Once you get the notification it displays normally as it does and fades away. You come back pick up the phone the phone immediately shows you the notification on the lock screen no buttons pressed but it still beeps in case its on the desk and you don't touch it.

I guess some people could probably do that. While trying it out for myself, I was unconsciously swiping between the back button and home button. It's definitely a problem when I swipe directly over the home button.

We already have a quick way to bring up the start screen, one tap of the Win button, so if we have a single notification app people can install if they want to collect notifications together then this one tap would show notifications quickly from within any app. Also, we have to remember how this will work on Win8pro & WinRT devices when they get updated to 8.1 as well. I'd hate all the other solutions suggested if applied to the larger platforms, so this is the only acceptable option for me.

Also, for those that like the current system (of which there are many), a combined notification tile app would be optional and could be uninstalled from one or all platforms owned. Not so with a baked in non-modular approach.

I'd prefer notifications to accessed via a swipe to the left. Feels like there should be something there to "balance" the list of apps on the right.

I'm not trying to be rude, but a simple answer would be: I want my notifications to work properly, not that buggy one in WP8.
