The only good thing I can say about the iOS notification apparatus is that at least it is annoying and intrusive consistently and reliably. I don't know why WP7 doesn't seem to display notifications anywhere but the lockscreen or homescreen, but Microsoft needs to address that ASAP. I've missed many notifications in WP7 because I've been using an app instead of loitering on the homescreen waiting for notifications.
iOS doesn't necessarily need widgets, at least not the way Android implements them. What is needed is some way to show glanceable information on the lockscreen or homescreen. You currently have to jailbreak to do this.
