[Official] Initial thoughts on Developer Preview of WP8.1

Re: Initial thoughts on Developer Preview of WP8.1

FM Radio is something I am not able to find currently. Also I am trying to get the fantastic Bing Podcast app but no luck so far. Otherwise really loving WP8.1 so far:-)

I'm loving this Update! :3 my fave features so far are notifications Cortana(she is very responsive so far) backgrounds and new Camera :p

Loving 8.1 so far, swype is amazingly quick and intuitive. Loving the improvements of internet explorer, with embedded youtube player, weave has become amazingly good and I can't wait for similar update for wpcentral. My only gripe so far is the games listing in app list. Cortana is beast, love that feature.

Re: Initial thoughts on Developer Preview of WP8.1

I am going to be very frank here.

This update might just be what Microsoft has wanted in the last 5 years. The start screen is amazing, just easiness is reflected in the parallax view. Options to choose more tiles makes sense. The notification center is fast and amazing. What I am missing the most is the data toggle shortcut on the Quick action menu, I cannot understand how Microsoft forgot that. The ability to run Cortana is amazing, recognition precise at most times. Cortana's interface is Microsofts signature now. Sleek and cool to the eye. (Can someone tell me how can Cortana show the weather in Celsius?).

Good to see the battery sense and storage sense getting options to be pinned. Getting habituated to the swype keyboard.
Disappointed to see the FB chat removed from messaging hub, I heard skype is integrated, cant see where it is in the OS.

Coming to the additional features, Quiet Hours is so impressive, such a great idea to innovate. Hats off to you MS on this.
What I didnt like is the game list getting out of Xbox menu.

I wish more app developers help make transparent tiles, they really help make the view beautiful.

Waiting for more. :) ;) Cheers !!

I am LOVING this update. My coworkers are all jealous now. (I'm the only one at my company with a Windows Phone.)

I only have 2 questions:
  1. I heard that Cortana will "handle" calls and texts during quiet hours. How does she handle them exactly?
  2. I noticed that Cortana does a Bing search when I ask, "What time is it?". Is that supposed to happen or am I not asking the correct question?

1. She will silent those calls and messages or probably that number will hear a busy or not available message.
2. She didnt get you.

So far, favorable. Little things here and there, but overall, a HUGE step in the right direction in many areas.

*If only they had added custom EMAIL alerts by contact, that would have made it PERFECT.

I'm getting used to all the other visual enhancements, the background image and the see through tiles, the Notification Center, etc.

Bluetooth connectivity is still intermittent, but it has gotten much better since 8.0.

Getting used to Word Flow (let's call it by OUR name shall we? ;-) ). I think this is going to be my biggest adjustment. I used to use both thumbs in landscape mode, now, using one finger or thumb, sliding it around in portrait, picking the letters WAY ahead of time. Going to take some getting used to.

I literally can't stop playing with my phone. I've been talking to Cortana all day. My staff are jealous as all heck. Even the die-hard Droid users.

Use volume up + power button for the screenshots

I am SHOCKED that our in-line texting/messaging is GONE. Now we have to use separate apps for Facebook-messaging and for Messenger (Skype-messaging)?! What? Our single-thread texting/chatting was a huge bragging point over iPhone and Android. What were they thinking???

I share your sentiments

Yes, true! The screenshot is now working with volume up plus power button!
And about comma button, there is an option in settings to show it always.... Well done so far MS!

That's interesting. Has anyone noticed any differences between the stock camera app and Nokia camera?

What camera app are you all now using?

I've previously used the Nokia camera as the default. Going to try the default for a while now and see how it compares.

I couldn't find differences between photos taken with nokia camera or stock camera app, I guess they both use the same algorithms, altough photos from nokia camera MAY have less noise, don't know if it was just my imagination..

I said about the quality due the fact when you take pictures, they look sharp as hell, but when you're going to look, they seem softened

The comma key is not gone. Just press and hold period key just like in Surface.

The update is awesome. The customization and features are more than I had ever asked for on Windows Phone. I really like Cortana as well especially since she can recognize more things than the other personal assistant while keeping a conversation in context. Unfortunately, she is a bit buggy still and required a few repeats of my query (and my 920 has 3 microphones...) though and some of her responses sounded like the old TellMe system (understandable).

Another surprising thing was the performance. Some areas felt like they were dragging behind and some apps and places in WP8.1 lagged which was shocking. I'm guessing Microsoft is hard at work with fixing what ever performance issues the OS is having.

I love most of the animations but some felt out of place and kind of awkward.

And finally the XBOX Music app is atrocious. Give me back the old app. This one lags more and is more cluttered. I feel claustrophobic just in the main page interface...

FINALLY, FINALLY, I ADORE THE CALENDAR APP! IT'S A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Foir me, it is the ability to store apps on the SD card. I own an HTS 8S with 4GB internal and now I enjoy having 1GB of free internal memory :D

The final one will be similar, with some bug fixes perhaps, but nothing too different.
