On the 'Upcoming & rumored devices' sections and policies

Just a quick note: I realize that the sub-forum for 'Upcoming & rumored devices' is a little more...hokey...than the rest by it's nature. After all, they are RUMORED devices, grab your X-Files VHS tapes and tinfoil hat kind of stuff.

That's fine, but I would prefer if someone (probably Dave) just runs by me a quick heads up on creating those forums for specific devices.

Here I'm referring to the Lumia 1525 and Lumia 1820 sub-forums. Both of these are fictional devices, completely made up. (Even the specs are laughable, "...charged by solar power and expected in September". Really, people? ). There's no reason to have sub-forums for them as it does somewhat legitimize their existence (or the rumor).

Rule of thumb: if we don't report on it on the front page, it's probably because I think it's horse****, not because we missed it.

I'll leave to someone to clean it up, but those two sub-forums need to disappear.

Thanks

I was under the impression these forums didn't appear until they got the go-ahead from you. I'm guessing that hasn't happened at least in this case.

Dave is the only one that can create forums besides James I believe. He'll have to delete them. But good to know and have a set policy. Sometimes users ask for forums to be created. We can nip such instances in the bud in the future.

NP. This is definitely "grey area" stuff, so it could go either way.

Straight from the horses mouth. (I mean James)

I was instructed to make these forums because discussion is good. I told James I don't want to make any device forum even under rumored devices until we hit the 7 out of 10 mark on the blog. I was overruled and the Surface Phone forum was born. I don't agree with it but it is what James had instructed me to do. I am going to nudge him to join this conversation.

Cool. I can see the rationale for that and like I said, this is more a grey area rather than right/wrong.

For Surface phone, there were some legit reports about that project (WSJ, NYT) and I've confirmed it as well, though at this point it's 'DOA'. Still, at the time, discussion was fine.

For those two phones, they are really just made up by nobodies and just don't warrant discussion. I mean, people are free to create threads on it, no issue there, but adding a subforum sort of legitimizes a fantasy phone.

I have no emotional attachment to those forums I wouldn't have have made them in the first place if I hadn't been told to do so. I should clarify that I was not told to make those forums exactly but I was told that we want to make forums about hot topics even if their existence can't be verified. I thank device should remain as threads not be promoted to forums until there is at leas some solid information about the device but that's is not what I was told to do.

Don't back peddle brow your right these forums shouldn't exist. The surface phone sub was created 6 months after the original project was over. A forums member wanted to discuss the possibility of this device today and that is why that forum was created. It had nothing to do with the original project. I believe that we should hold at least some accountability to the existence of the device before it is promoted to a forum. Anything short of that hurts our credibility. I know its just the forum but still when readers see devices promoted to forum status on this website it should only be when we have some insight into its existence.

I definitely agree with you. One of the reasons why I like WPCentral and dislike that other site that claims it's the "largest independent Windows Phone site" (which I know is a false claim), is because WPCentral articles are factual, not just any BS that's found without any verification.
