On Win10 10080 not getting stable USB conection to backup

I'm thinking to go back to 8.1. Before I do that I wanted to take a copy of the pictures folder and others. Unfortunately on my two PCs (both on Win10 10074) I always get an error message that the "hosts" connection timed out. I am unable to complete a copy of any folder. Even the Whatsapp folder with only 122 files (~150KB each), does not copy.

Any thoughts?
