Only able to connect to WiFi?

My husband was having battery issues with his andriod so he took my Nokia 521 with him on a driving trip to TN. It worked fine on the way down - no connection problems at all. When he was down there he installed Mapquest at the hotel (most likely using WiFi). After that he couldn't get a cellular connection. He uninstalled Mapquest and still nothing.

When I look at settings -> cellular -> there is no connection...... scanning is unsuccessful......

Any suggestions?

Nokia Here maps work on the 521. Did he not want to use those?

Does he have Network Setup app installed? It will find correct APN for his carrier.
