OS/firmware updates in Windows 10 Mobile

How are OS and firmware updates being handled in Windows 10 Mobile? With the Insider preview app, will it totally bypass carrier approval? I'm looking at moving to Cricket this weekend and hear they don't do OS updates. I really want to save money so I'm looking the Cricket branded 640. I might see how things shake out with my wife's new phone and spring for an unlocked 830, but my other idea was to get a cheap 2nd gen Moto E and wait for Windows 10 Mobile devices...finally try Android... and play Plants vs Zombies 2 on a touchscreen.

Does that include firmware updates? I know it took forever for Verizon to release either Denim or Cyan, even though I have the Preview app. The whole reason for sticking with a Lumia if I can't get Qi is because I trust MS with firmware updates.
