Physical size of Smartphones in general

It's just that carrying around a small size flat brick is inconvenient. The format isn't right. Slightly smaller than the current 810 would be great. In the 'old times' before iPhone the phones were smaller.
I'm probably one of those who should have got a BlackBerry Q10 instead. I know it's bigger than 50 x 90 but still.

The HTC Pure was an awesome form factor. Sexy, solid, functional device with good old WM6.5. Sure you can't really have three friends huddle around the phone to watch a YouTube video, but that aside, writing with the stylus was perfectly fine. Typing (even swype), was fine. Gaming was fine! Faux multi touch was supported by most emulators for resistive screens (in fact there were multi touch keyboards). The pure even has a little zoom bar to replace pinch zoom, which imo is better than pinch zoom. Zoom with the thumb of one hand, without changing the grip on your phone. Simple and convenient, and adds length to the phone to make the size juuuust right.

Oh and you could operate it with gloves! Funny how often new technology has to "reinvent" the features of older technology. I wonder when capacitive buttons will evolve to be as good as hardware buttons are... Which the pure has!

Nowadays you can't get a phone in that size, not even low tier ones go that small these days. I miss this phone, oh the things I would do that android still can't do well, or at all. ActiveSync Bluetooth is an irreplaceable lost technology :(

The standard open file explorer shell window apps would tap into of wm6.5 still trumps whatever the heck android uses (as well as WP sadly). I mean I could take any simple video player, tell it to open a file and be presented with the standard OS open file dialog. Then I could paste a URL or samba network share into the address bar, I could browse the samba server! the OS would deliver the file to the video player app.

What happened?! WP removed that core function and it's now the responsibility of every developer to implement http/ftp/samba support in their apps. There'll never be an ActiveSync. I love WP but the power user in me want the underlying power I KNOW exists under this metro shell...

Where did that come from?
Are you done?
No. The reason phones and laptops are designed the way they are is because they're meant to be portable. If you want a shorter device, you must compensate for the loss of space by increasing the thickness. You'd end up with a cube if you want a phone as small as a 620 but with high-tier specs. I cannot comprehend how you'd use a cube as a phone.

IMO the Lumia 720 has the best form factor for a smartphone. 4.3 inch screen fits the hand perfectly. It isn't too small either for say reading books or browsing online. A great looking mid range phone.

New chipsets are coming out on a regular basis. No need to go to a full cube to make it fit.
Slightly narrower and taller and a bit thicker. Surely that can be done.

I suggest picking up an HP Veer on ebay. Of course it runs a dead OS, but webOS is/was a great OS that never really got a chance.

When I first got my HD7 I thought it was a bit on the big side. I eventually got used to the size. Same with my 920. I wear slim fit jeans (not skinny jeans!) and it fits fine in my pocket with room to spare.

I don't have huge hands but I find that I am comfortable with phones like the GS4.

Well i know there was someone in the forums once who wanted one with the size and styling of the Zune HD.

I've got an 820, but i just bought a 620 as a gift, and other than being a tad chunky, it's sweet size.

I understand people wanting a smaller footprint on a higher end device, but multi-media users are driving sales right now. Multi-media users need larger real estate. I am not sure what would change that.

When a "mini" device is the same size as the HTC EVO that was "huge" and a game changer when it came out 3 years ago (4.3"), the worm has turned.

Not without making the phone completely unusable.

Don't really see why it would be unusable.
3.5" screen would be sufficient (at least for me).

Anyhow, I just like a smaller footprint overall. Hope it comes soon. Not going to go for a phone with 5" screens anytime soon.
Hey, why not a display port on the device. The Raspberry Pi $35 Linux computer has got HDMI out. That'd be awesome.
Hook up the smart phone to an external monitor, add Bluetooth keyboard and mouse ---> cool gadget.
