That chipmunk shot is perfect quality!

If you could be so kind and do the following test-> Take shot of something, camera fully zoomed and then shot without any zoom of same object from same place and then zoom in to that photo later and frame it like first zoomed picture. I just want to know if there is difference in IQ when using zoom before shot.

I know. I could crop even more and you can see myself in the reflection in its eye taking the photo. Nuts!

But yeah here is what you requested. I dont have anything cool to image, but here is from my porch. Tripod used for 1020 shots. 920 comparison crops below (no tripod).

Full scene:

Image taken by zooming in as far as the phone would let me, then taking the image:

Cropped to match the photo above (as good as I could) from the full 36MP image:

ALSO, just for fun, the same thing on my Lumia 920...

Full scene (920):

Zoom in to area before taking photo (920):

Crop from original 8.7 MP full scene image (920):

Very interesting results. At first images looks exactly same but after while there is very clear difference.

Zooming first and then taking photo doesn't seem to receive any sharpening from software, but it also have less visible noise. Cropped image in other hand is clearly sharper, but also has more noise. This is seen if you zoom in to blue sky or look background mountains.

This needs more investigating since there might be benefit in some situations if you use full zoom instead of cropping. Low light images would be interesting to see. Also partial zooming would be great to compare if there is same pattern.

Edit: Did some more pixel peeping and now comparing to that non zoomed full res pic. That full res pic has even less noise compared to zoomed then taken shot pic. Conculusion is that there might be some sharpening going on. These two photos were more close in IQ compared to cropped photo.

I made two conclusions of this.
1. Nokia needs to improve their processing method
2. Even fully zoomed 5Mpix images from 1020 beat 920 full 8Mpix images in terms of sharpness, noise and colours.

Got a chance to take some quick pics while out doing some field studies for my grad class today. Didn't have much time to go manual settings so everything is auto since we were moving across the beach pretty quick. Posted them to flickr, and put in some of the crops I'm going to use for my class as well.

I'm coming from a iPhone 5, and honestly couldn't be happier with the Lumia 1020. I also have the camera grip case, and it came in handy today taking all of these pics. Makes it more comfortable to hold, and the extra battery is nice.

Took a few photos at a club/concert I went to this weekend. Was as low light as you're gonna get without having no light (except for the strobes etc), and with the smoke machines and what not. I have to say, I was quite satisfied with the results considering the conditions and that I used auto mode with no tripod.

And a crop from the full resolution version of the last photo.

Not sure how to upload the full pictures so I just hosted them with my photobucket account.
Man is that Sarah from the Robotonists? That is so random that you would post that, it is one of my favorite bands, and pretty local to LA. Either that or a look-alike. The weirdest thing is a few posts up someone posted a pic from just north of LA along the coast and I looked at it and was like 'wow that is def between santa barbara and LA' and then 2 posts later someone else is like 'That is ventura!'. Hahaha.

PS I know she just played her first gig as the band western bells, so if it is her, how do they sound? Absolutely no music by the new band has hit the internet yet.

All of the following are the 5MP versions, no post processing.

This sweet ride was outside of a Battleground Texas training thing. Not sure you can see them, really, but it has flames running up and down the sides (they were the same color as the car, you could only see the outlines):

I took these on another one of my walks just earlier this evening:

What are some settings you guys are playing with using pro-shot camera? I currently have it on Auto with Flash off so I'm trying to find a good balance for best results I was thinking 400 ISO.
