Power and LED charging indicator - can someone help?

I can't find anywhere what the LED charging indicator is supposed to show.

We have just got one of these for xmas and it's not powering on - every device I've had recently has arrived with some charge, but it seems this either is broken or has no charge. It's been charging for the past hour with a little, faint, red light appearing on the front - is this correct? Or does the fact it's red indicate something is wrong?

I'm still getting zero life out of the device even after charging for an hour, so thinking something must be wrong...

Just wanted to check before I return

, you may be able to reset your phone using the hardware buttons. On Nokia Lumia phones (and some others), do the following to reset your phone:

1. Press and hold the Volume down
   
   and Power
   
   buttons at the same time until you feel a vibration (about 10-15 seconds).
   
2. When you feel the vibration, immediately press and hold the Volume down
   
   button until you see a large exclamation mark.
   
3. Once the exclamation mark appears, press the following four buttons in this order:Volume up
   
   , Volume down
   
   , Power
   
   , Volume down
   
   . Your phone should now reset and restart itself. (It might take a while for the reset to finish.)
