Propping up on lap...?

Anyone found a decent solution to use the Surface Pro on your lap?

With the kb attached and kick stand out its workable but the screen is tilted too far forward
and too vertical for comfortable use.

Would like to use it with the kb off, I'd like it to sit about 25-35 degrees off the horizontal?
Tried flipping it upside down but the stand can not hold its weight.
A
foldable cover like the smart cover for the iPad would be nice.
Any
solutions found?

Can't you flip the keyboard around the bottom and have the device kickstand rest on that? Or is that where you are suggesting the angle of attack is too poor to use it?

Flipping the keyboard works well. Just odd . Same issue I noticed with my rt.

I kind of find it hard to believe people use laptops on their laps without protection? This whole lap thing is just odd to me.

Perhaps I am out of touch, but im sure the people that use laptops on their laps or on their tummy when in bud probably have something under it like a laptop platform with fan. Get one of those platforms if you want to use it on your lap.

The flub bub how the surface sucks on a lap is just mind bottling.

Not sure who's bottling anything, but FWIW I use my laptop on my lap on the couch, in bed, etc all the time and don't require any accessories to do so. I use "protection" for other activities in bed.

I don't think it's "flub bub" as for me it's a key way I use my computer so it would have to be an adjustment, as would many other potential buyers.

not really, the angle seems more suited to working on in an environment like an office with florescent lights. I find it just right to prevent a glare from them in my office. On the other hand, when in your lab the stand is pretty lousy, I have used a pillow to prop it up at the right angle for me, I hope someone comes out with a case that has say multiple level stand...

Here's something I've been trying:

Flip the surface upside down, open the kickstand. This gives you the 25-35 degree angle you're looking for.
To prevent the cover from closing, just wedge something in there, like an eraser or something. It holds pretty well, and you won't be putting too much force on it so it shouldn't be damaging.

Not a very elegant solution, but quick and dirty if you really want that viewing angle.

One could use a relatively cheap laptop pad? I've one w/fans for my current HP EliteBook, but am thinking it'll do the job (stability at least) for when my Pro comes in (whenever BB gets their freakin shipments that is...grrr...)

How about those "lap desks" you find in bookstores? The ones that are like a little table on a cushion? Think that might work?

For some reason this made me laugh out loud

So I took my "lap desk" that I used for my laptop (it has about a15-20% angle), turned it around so that the angle is facing away from me on my lap and just put the SP on it with the kickstand out and it actually makes the angle pretty nice for browsing, working and typing on your lap. Granted this is only pretty useful for me at home where I have the lap desk, but hey that is where I use it the most on my lap...

It will nice if someone comes out with a nice case for the SP that has multiple angles to rest the SP on..

That's what I'm using right now as I'm typing. It works, but it gives your little Pro a footprint the size of a full tower. Also doesn't solve the viewing angle problem. you kind of need to be laying back in the couch to use it comfortably. An adjustable hinge keyboard "dock" would be the ideal solution (like the Helix). Or, you know, get a laptop.

I just picked up a SmartLap portable desk. Instead of being a desktop on a pillow, it's sort of like the bed trays fro eating in bed - it has two hinged "legs" on either side that pop open so it sits on the chair on either side of your hips (if mine were any larger than they already are, it would not fit me. I'm not a petite woman though, so sizing is going to work with most people, I would think). Obviously it will not work for all situations, but it's great for when I'm sitting in my recliner, as I am right now, typing this. A couple cool things about it:

  • There's a little indentation at the front, perfect for setting the stylus so it doesn't roll away or become a cat toy
  • It opens up to storage - I can toss a thumb drive in, my cleaning cloth and even my charger (I think - it will just be deep enough, I believe). The Surface itself actually even fits in there, if you really wanted stash it there (I might stash my sleeve inside - we'll see)
