Replacement back plates

@Ejay how long did it take to recieve your order for those back covers? I orderd from the same place! thanks

I wonder if all those who buy these covers and have issues are using the AT&T RM-983? The wireless charging is one area the 983 differs from the 984 and 985, AT&T having added PMA in addition to Qi. I wonder if the charging coil is also slightly different in the backplates?

Good point. I think you're right.

I noticed on the Ebay seller from Spain's page that it specifically states the wireless charging functionality is only compatible with the RM-984... I don't think Fonejoy was intentionally trying to be deceptive - unfortunately they probably just didn't know about the issue. I contacted them and the guy who emailed me back said the parts were straight from Microsoft UK.

Anyway... like Ejay I messed around with different positions on the charger and tried bending the contacts a bit, but no noticeable difference and frankly I don't want to mess with repositioning the phone to make it work - defeats the whole purpose of the convenience of wireless charging. At that rate I might as well just plug it in. ;)

I'm thinking I'm going to go ahead and try to melt the glue holding the coils on and see if I can swap them between the green AT&T back and the replacement white one I got from FoneJoy. I'll probably give it a shot this weekend - will post back here if I'm able to get it working.

Only tried the green one so far, but the Phonejoy chargers seem to work fine with the RM-985 as well.

This is really strange. Why are there no official backplates for the 830 that we can buy directly from MS??? Ridiculous! What's the point of having swappable backplates if they are not readily available?

Good point. I just ordered my 830 from at&t, "sidegraded" from a 920, and just assumed that there would be the ability to purchase replacement covers. I'm completely surprised by what I'm reading about the lack of covers and batteries. I really hope this switch turns out to be the right decision.

Switched from the orange back on my silver-framed Lumia 830 - appropriate for Halloween and Thanksgiving - to the white back cover (with red accent color) the other day for the holiday season and a matching, festive home screen background.

Makes me feel like I have a new phone when I switch themes (back covers, accent color, home screen)... hopefully that means I'll actually keep this phone for a while and not feel compelled to get the latest and greatest every time.

What version of the 830 does Rogers carry?

All Canadian 830's are RM-985 as far as I've been told by the Canadian seller who I bought mine from.
I got an orange one from here. New Genuine Housing Battery Back Cover Door Case for Nokia Lumia 830 | eBay It took less than 10 days it fits perfectly and has NOKIA written on the back like the OE one. Charging it using a DT-900 is a breeze and I don't have to fiddle with it to make it work. The Qi pad and wiring are the same as my original black one. It is OE as far as I can tell.

I just ordered from one of the new China sources on ebay that popped up. $12 including shipping for orange. Not sure what I'll get. It will take a while for shipping until I can post about it.

the one from Spain will be
Price:US $13.59 Buy It Now
Shipping: $10.30
Total $23.89

which is similar to others listed on ebay.

Edit: The guys from China claim theirs is OEM. Not sure if they know what that means....

well, that was a failure.....
what they sent looks OEM, however it's the wrong part. It's the back cover that was made for the flip cover. One side has no tabs and is open and has the attachment points for the flip cover (see orange cover in picture on right). It's also thicker than the regular cover (I had the flip cover before and it looks exactly like that). In addition, there is no qi charging coil, which is shown in their pictures.
Getting my money back. They have no clue what they are selling.

I got one here it has the NOKIA on the back and Qi wireless. Before I bought one I asked if it has the NOKIA branding on the back and Qi wireless because they say Original and also "Compatible" with: For Nokia Lumia 830. They confirmed yes even tho' the pictures don't show NOKIA. It would be harder to get your money back if you don't ask the relevant questions and get the answer in writing. I always do that with any eBay purchase. I never give the seller the benefit of the doubt until I've purchased from them before. I did ask all the questions before I bought and they confirmed. Don't worry, I will get my money back. It's pretty obvious they f'ooed up.

edit: I got my refund. According to the seller they've messed up order and blamed holiday season. They are out of stock for correct item, "according to seller".
Not sure what to do with the wrong cover, maybe I can make my own flip cover....

I ordered the orange one from Spain the day before you posted this as the China one seemed a bit to vague.
Now I am glad I did.
Thanks for posting!

If anyone is interested I finally got around to swapping the coil from my green AT&T plate to the white replacement one I ordered. You can see the two coils are noticeably different (AT&T coil on the left):

Anyway - I just used a hairdryer and a few random tools (pliers, credit card, guitar pick, small screw driver) to melt the adhesive and slowly/carefully peel off the coil. Lined it up on the replacement plate, heated it again, pressed into place and applied pressure with some woodworking clamps. Let it sit for 15 minutes or so and tested it - works fine.

If anyone else does this, practice removing the coil on your replacement plate first since it's not compatible anyway - the adhesive part is kind of a foil-type material and will flake away pretty easily if you don't go slow and heat up the glue regularly. Not sure how critical a role it plays in functionality, but I'm sure there's reason it's made of the material it is, so try to minimize damage.
