WPCentral Question

Hi all,

Upgraded my Lumia 1020 from 8.0 to 8.1 Dev Preview, and created a backup. Loved it, except the secondary mic stopped working with the update. So I got another 1020.

Long story short, I wanted to check if the backup I created on the 8.1 phone will negatively affect the 8.0 phone if I choose to restore it in the initial setup.

I could upgrade the second phone to 8.1 Dev Preview which would assuage my concern, but I do not want to take another chance and upgrade the 8.0 phone to 8.1 until the official release comes out on AT&T, because getting another replacement in case the same problem happens is out of the question.

Thanks!

If the problem was caused by the update, you should have been able to perform a recovery using the Nokia Software Recovery Tool and go back to 8.0. It is unlikely that the update permanently damaged your secondary mic. The 8.1 backups will not restore properly on 8.0. You can wait until you update to 8.1 officially and then do a hard reset and restore it at that time.

Hi Maaz,

I beg to differ about the update affecting the secondary mic, and so would others (search the MSDN for "Update to 8.1 breaks the second microphone of some models of Lumias - confirmed by many users"). It has also been described elsewhere that the using the Software Recovery Tool to bring it back to 8.0 doesn't work nor does it solve the microphone problem.

That said, thank you for the information regarding the backup question. I'll wait until the official rollout for AT&T happens.
