Safe Mode

I purchased a Surface Pro 2 without a type or touch cover. I need to reboot into safe mode in order to install some software. My problem is that I can't seem to restart into safe mode without a cover. I tried to plug in a usb keyboard and, nothing. I can't seem to figure it out. Anyone have any ideas?

Go to charms bar => settings => change computer settings => update/recover => recover => advanced start.
