Samsung Ativ S - Windows Phone 8.1 Update - Developer Preview

the only problems that i faced are camera issues
slow switching betewin camera mods sometimes get stuck
stuck on refocus [night conditions]
flash after picture capture
reboot when using the built in app

Yeah and what happens sometimes with new operating system builds is they sometimes require new drivers and can't use the old ones due to some change. It seems the ATIV camera driver needs an update.

It's unfortunate but things like this is why the OEM is allowed to block the update. So they can update the drivers and make sure the phone functions correctly.

Carriers should have zero say though. **** them.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

Agreed on your last point 100%.

I have upgraded my Ativ S (Rogers) to 8.1, install went fine, took a while, and other then a battery draining issue others have been talking about with various models. seems fine.
There seems to be an issue with the camera though, when you switch between picture and video then back to picture, it just gives you a black screen, then quits, and won't let you back into the camera app until a reboot. but just shooting pics seems to be fine.
Having a video issue with xbox video also (aspect ratio problem, compared to using the old music+video app), but it all seems to be minor, since it's just a preview/beta.

ATIV S on Bell in Canada here.

I upgraded yesterday and a few hours later did a hard reset. No restart bug, no other major problems, things are smooth for the most part:

One bug I came across was cell data not working. However upon research I found that manually entering the APN fixes it (on most). So I tracked down the Bell APN, entered it, and everything's been working fine since.

The only other bug is that the camera sometimes won't work. It'll load up, but the buttons are grayed out and you can't take a picture/video. Sometimes it works though. Haven't found a pattern yet.

Some rare stutters here and there, but other than that, it is stable.

Battery life is lower though. Although I can't tell if it actually is lower, or if I'm just playing with it more. Right now I have Cortana enabled and she's #3 on the battery sense drain list. Thinking of disabling her as she's little more than a dressed up tellme.

Regarding the APN issue, could you check the Samsung APN settings and tell me if any APNs are listed?

After Update and Hard restart i lost all my APN. Now i can't run Internet sharing, it show that there is no cellular data connection to share. Internet and MMS works.

Sounds like you have the same problem I had, check in the "APN" section of settings and see if any APNs are listed. If not, just go through Mobile+SIM and enter the settings manually.

That is what i did, I enter manualy those settings in cellular+SIM but Internet Sharing still is not working. Internet Sharing do not recognize those settings as Activ.

Does this comes out after you did this?

1. When you change the region to US on settings > after cortana appears it will keep phone restarting over and over again
2. When you place cortana on your start screen, same issue will appear
3. If you remove the haptic feedback same issue occurs.
4. When you access the camera the 30 sec restart will appear after taking pictures

Ah, that's odd. I haven't come across that bug.
Even after a second hard reset the same bug occurs. I did a hard reset, restored my back up, let Windows Phone install all apps and changed all remaining settings (apn, E-Mail,...) Then I did a restart and voila "Over the horizon" was back. I have no idea, what setting restores the default tune after every restart.

I've only come across two issues and that is mainly it.. The first is my SD card sometimes will randomly not be detected by my phone after the update, and the second is the fact that cellular data might not get activated right away. I fixed the cellular data issue with sprint but it still doesn't say I have an active network although I do:

I haven't done the APN fix yet but I will be sure to look into it.. Also there is no profile/prl update option for Sprint users with the Ativ S Neo

I currrntly have only the camera issue and there are some stters here and there.

For those who have continous reset problem look here: Samsung Ativ S Rebooting itself all the time after wp 8.1 update!

What I think is neccessery for a safe upgrade to WP8.1:
-you have the latest Samsung updates, not sure which version is this. If you have an unlocked phone you should already have this update, but if its carrier locked your carrier might not push you the update. Now I m not sure on this but it is quite possible.
-disable the Samsung special settings found under "settings/extra settings" as most of them are driver dependant and could cause problems as the drivers are not yet WP8.1 optimised by Samsung.

Is anyone having a problem with internet explorer not opening from any means(links.direct etc)

Hey sorry for the delay.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by "Samsung" apn? The apn settings are all blank after a hard reset. None of the fields had any text in them.

Using ATIV S in Orange, Israel.
Thanks for the APN tip EchoOne30 ! Had the same issue.
I am having the exact camera issue, After reboot works fine, but on second try the buttons are greyed out and can't take any pic or record a video.
Has anyone found a solution or workaround for this camera issue?
Other than that things are working as expected.

I'm GDR3 version 8.0, however the firmware seems to be the GDR1 version, probably the firmware s what is causing the problem reboot every 30 seconds!
Let's get organized to find a solution! do not wait for others!

After a hardreset I noticed, that I can't change my ringtone. Somehow it's set to the default one by Samsung. Does anybody else noticed this problem?
I am able to set my ringtone to whatever I want but if I reboot for any reason, the ringtone goes back to default setting. Thought it was just me doing something wrong.

Considering Samsung has released the Ativ SE, I suspect they will not be slow about 8.1 firmware. My concern, as always, is the carriers willingness to release the firmware. Or does firmware bypass the carriers?

Me too... I was start thinking that something with my configuration is wrong. Let's hope, that's Microsoft is fixing this bug and that Samsung is releasing a new firmware sooner than later.
