The Samsung phones are generally very durable, they just feel cheap.
There's a world of difference between them and the sturdy high quality Volvo/Mercedes like feel of the Nokia phones.
That said, I can definitely understand why people like the Samsungs, they do a great job of keeping them lightweight while still being tough enough to hold up to years of use. Samsung also gives them great specs in most cases, I really like the AMOLED screens, though I hate the way Samsung keeps making them comically bigger with every generation and how everyone is forced to follow this trend to compete.
Personally I just can't buy one of their phones because I cringe when I pick them up, I just don't like the feel. Even though I know they are durable, I just don't like a $600 device that feels like a childs toy to me.
I also have some biases against them for the Apple thing and Android. I am 100% convinced they deliberately ripped Apple off and I hate the fact that they are so pro-Android.
Nokia is the natural choice for me because I like their phone designs best by far and I love that they are 100% behind Windows Phone. I wouldn't rule out buying a Samsung WP phone, but they would have to do something beyond amazing to win me over and they haven't yet.
