Samsung is definitely out of my list...Here's why..

The Samsung phones are generally very durable, they just feel cheap.

There's a world of difference between them and the sturdy high quality Volvo/Mercedes like feel of the Nokia phones.

That said, I can definitely understand why people like the Samsungs, they do a great job of keeping them lightweight while still being tough enough to hold up to years of use. Samsung also gives them great specs in most cases, I really like the AMOLED screens, though I hate the way Samsung keeps making them comically bigger with every generation and how everyone is forced to follow this trend to compete.

Personally I just can't buy one of their phones because I cringe when I pick them up, I just don't like the feel. Even though I know they are durable, I just don't like a $600 device that feels like a childs toy to me.

I also have some biases against them for the Apple thing and Android. I am 100% convinced they deliberately ripped Apple off and I hate the fact that they are so pro-Android.

Nokia is the natural choice for me because I like their phone designs best by far and I love that they are 100% behind Windows Phone. I wouldn't rule out buying a Samsung WP phone, but they would have to do something beyond amazing to win me over and they haven't yet.

See this is what I'm wondering. I haven't owned a Samsung since my flip phone so I don't know how much it's changed, but I'm watching these very unscientific drop tests and each time I see the Samsung glass just break on the S3. I get that it's not unibody, but if that plastic is designed to displace any kinetic energy and other forces I can't say it's doing a good job if each time the glass is fracturing.

And that doesn't necessarily make me question the plastic, I'm sure it's fine, but density of material has relevance too.

Other than that would any one care to enlighten me to more reliable demonstrations?

Agreed

I wouldn't mind Samsung's tv design team having input on the next galaxy phone

+1 Brilliantly put socialcarpet.

@Snowmutt: how about breaking your bubble with this one:

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 Drop Test - YouTube

Like socialcarpet very very rightly said, it doesnt look at a 600$ device. It is anything but that. It looks metal, but is plastic. It may be sturdy but looks toyish. It looks like an iPhone but actually is....woooopps!! hahaha... with all due respect, Sammy has to do a loottttt more.
And for those who argue Nokia too is plastic, their plastic doesn't look and feel cheap...

When did bendable plastic suddenly become "durable" and "strong"...? I clearly missed that bus... :D

Wow! The Samsung hate from Windows fans seem even worse than the hate from IOS fans. It is quite disgusting actually.

Especially the BS about Apple having a case. No way did they have one and that is why I sold my iPad 3 even though I am having a tough time finding a replacement. The Nexus 7 screen sucks, Windows RT is too low res, windows 8 pro tabs are too thick, transformer infinity sucks. I have to hand it to them, they make a nice tablet. Still, they lost a customer for life after that crap they pulled on Samsung.

Bendable plastic becomes durable when it is attached to the chassis of the phone. The entire thing is designed to be sturdy when assembled in one piece, but flexible enough to take a shock. Think of it like a unibody car, the sheet metal parts are all flexible and flimsy, even after stamping, until you weld them together. Then they are rigid and strong. It is a far better material for this purpose than glass or aluminum, not only because of weight, but because of its ability to rebound after an impact. If you don't like Samsung for whatever reason, that's fine, but this design has been proven solid many times over.

Bendy plastics are okay to absorb small impacts. But the plastic is still thin, and can only do so much. When you make something that light, you do sacrifice some durability. Also, having a removable cover also sacrifices a little durability.

To get something you sacrifice something else.

Though I will say that even throwing a cheap $10 gel case on a Samsung phone makes it pretty sturdy. You could drop it from head height and it will likely be okay.

Oh, knock it off already. Everyone is venturing an opinion - to them they don't like the form or the material or whatever. No one is saying it's a poor device or it's junk.

To me, it feels like a warmed over S3, with little or no thought put into it at all. It's like the engineers said, "Okay, we'll just put a different colour cover on it and throw on the o/s. Good enough. What's for lunch?" It just seems lacklustre compared with the other offerings.

aside from people not understanding plastic... why is samsung being bashed for being the same as the galaxy SIII repackaged? isn't the 8X just a repackaged One X?

Valid point.

To me, HTC seems like more effort was put into positioning the device into the stable of Windows Phone offerings. They seem committed and serious about the platform - trying to distinguish it from their Android phones.

Samsung seems more like, "Introducing the Note II! A revolutionary step in the mobile device world! Oh, and we also have this Windows thing too."

I actually think Samsung is more customer friendly than Nokia. Nokia is telling its potential customers that they don't deserve a high end phone unless they switch to AT&T, while Samsung is giving us its best-selling Galaxy S III high end tech on all three major carriers in the form of the ATIV S. No pretense, just the best selling chassis with the best OS.

4% market share. They are making a phone for an OS with 4% market share. What do you expect? Nokia had to put all their eggs in one basket so they are in innovate or die mode. I hope to **** China eats up wp8 because if not Nokia is as good as dead.

Um, did you read the original post in this thread and every single article from WPcentral saying "it sucks but some people might like it" in the first or second paragraph of every article? Go read them, it is quite sad actually. lol

Little or no thought put into it at all? You ever try designing a handset? To me they did an excellent job keeping it at 8.7 mm with expandable storage and a huge battery while HTC and Nokia had no pretenses of keeping their devices thin or use huge batteries. hardly what I would call putting no thought into it.

In your warped mind from listening to all the haters here everyday you might think that this is the case, but if you really look into, it is not. So I think you should knock it off, not me.

Anyways, I am not even considering the Ativ S, I am getting the 920, but it is really disgusting when I see Samsung doing just as much work as everyone else on their WP8 design and you see BS like "they just released a boring design with cheap plastic" especially when one of the other manufactures, HTC, really didn't more than them at all.

They put in a 2300mp battery in an 8.7mm chassis for you and you guys are calling them lazy. You don't see anything wrong with that picture? I am appalled and usually that is pretty hard to do. PS3 fan-boys manage it but even IOS fans are not this disgusting but I am afraid that my fellow Windows brethren has fallen from grace.

Samsung has a Oct 15 event in NY if anyone cares btw. Looks like they are going to show off their new Windows 8 ultra books.

You are aware that most of the iconography for iOS was lifted from Palm, right? Along with most of the iPhone engineering team.

Apple apologists complaining that Samsung copied Apple's copy of Palm unfairly should get the world's smallest violin fiddling away.

It is also just an imbecilic argument, because it actually tries to argue that people buy Samsung because they're confused into thinking it is Apple. Which makes as much sense as claiming that people buy Apple because they're confused into thinking it is Palm.

Enough already.

Yes, case closed alright, for me. Especially since the i900 was never released here and most of those comparisons look different.

How Apple managed to be allowed to present that stuff in court and make it work is beyond me. Of course, Apple can fool people less observant like you quite easily I see.

Don't bother with him. He is one of those people that believes everything he reads as long as it suits his biases.

I still can't believe he fell for the before iphone and after iphone slide Apple made. LOL The oldest marketing trick in the book where they pick the 4 least modern looking handsets out 40 Samsung handsets made before the iphone for the first slide, and then they pick the 4 most similar(but still very very different) after the iphone release for the second slide, with one or two of them not even being released in North America. haha sigh.

I am guessing social carpet buys the detergent with 8x the cleaning power of the leading brand even though he has no clue what is being multiplied 8 times. haha

Well don't you think Samsung would be interested in growing the WP market share and perhaps dominating it, like they did with Android? They have a shot at having their cake and eating it, too. Why not go for it?
