Saving photos in different formats

If I understand correctly a .jpg will deteriorate over multiple openings and savings, but a .png won't. These are both compressed formats, but it seems the .png is superior because it is lossless. Is there any way to have the camera app save photos in .png, or do they all need to be converted manually?

Jpegs only loose data if you edit or make changes to that Jpeg, simple opening, closing and saving does NOT deteriorate a Jpeg.
