I was thinking of upgrading to a higher Lumia series like the 920+ I want to sell on my Lumia 820 which is in perfect condition grade A manufacture restored.
I want to change it because I think the Lumia 820 will not keep up will all the updates but I want a bigger screen for updates such as 3 medium tiles etc...

The Lumia 820 and the 920 have the same processor and the same amount of system ram.

The 920 has a higher resolution screen and better camera and more onboard storage.

The 920 will never have the three medium tiles screen. Its screen is not big enough. You are going to have to go with something 5" or bigger. I would hang on to the 820 (insides same as the 920) until you can get one of the new 5" screen 9XX phones. Myself I am very happy with the 820, I like a smaller phone to carry around. I have a 7" tablet and a 8.9" tablet if I need more realestate.

Please be advised that all current phones running windows phone 8 will be eligible for an upgrade to windows 9 for free as confirmed by Microsoft.
So even the low end lumias will be upgraded.
You can check their tweet here.

If you are paying (your phones price + $50) max - assuming you are going to buy a used 920 - then yes.

I made the upgrade from 720 to 920 for $75.

I wouldn't recommend upgrading to 920, since it runs the exact same SoC as the 820, which presumably will get the same update on the future.
Switching from 820 to 920 just for future updates is pointless in my opinion.

The difference between 820 and 920 is not that much actually. Personally, I like the 820's screen better than the 920 due to the AMOLED panel.
If you want to upgrade, I would recommend to go straight to 1520 or 929/Icon/whateveritscalled which have Snapdragon 800 processor. The newer processor will guarantee you more future-proof updates.
However, I wouldn't recommend getting any of them now since the 1520 and 929/Icon are still expensive. I would recommend to wait for 3-5 months for the prices to drop

It will be completely free I assure you. If they are going to ditch users for an upgrade fee to the new generation of windows phone operating system then windows phone would be a complete failure. Just like what happen to 7.xx users they are unable to get the Apollo update and many user complained about it.
