SP4 i5 display driver bug

Chrome crashes on me several times a day. I am not positive, but I suspect that is also because of the video driver. Just a different manifestation of the same problem.

It may be I have not been using Chrome long enough to experience the driver fails.

I have installed the latest Chrome update the other day and it hasn't crashed since then. I'll keep an eye on it, but so far so good!

This is what we determined also over on Surfaceforums.com, that it's something connected with Edge causing the driver crashes. I know of few instances outside of Edge use where the crashes are occurring. This would explain why some people with the HP Envy, updated to Windows 10, are reporting the same thing.

I haven't had any crashes with Edge since resetting my SP4. Don't understand why that would be though. It has the latest firmware and updates.

No hard reset for me, but sometime last week with whatever the updates were, my Edge (with an addblock host file) is my solitary browser now. Hours per day. Multiple tabs. No crashes.

Not sure what the fix was, but it is welcomed. Even my battery life has gotten pretty good with "sleep mode" disabled in favor of hibernate. Since booting up takes so few seconds, the price for hibernate is meaningless to me, compared to the battery life gain.

Anyways, MUCH happier, even satisfied, with the SP4 now. Gorgeous device.

Feel like if I'm reading my own posts... lol

Could you, or anyone with a SP4 who is not having a problem with their display driver restarting, try something and report back: Using Edge go to any tumblr page, click on "archive" and then try to scroll through photos. This makes my SP4 display driver stop and restart every time. My SP4 display driver will be okay on some sites but others, like tumblr, will cause it to restart repeatedly.

Be happy to. I'm on their page but do not see "archive" as a choice. Do I have to "join" to get that access?

Also, try this:
Control panel > Internet Option > Advanced Tab > Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering

I actually did check this back when I was having driver crashes. And I have no idea if it helped. Strangely, when I just looked, it was unchecked again. So obviously it is NOT what is contributing to my stability. But I did have it checked at one time.

I have no idea if Internet Options even affects Edge though, since it use to be for Internet Explorer

Ad fender will help ease because its due to too many ads on the screen specially flash based

This definitely works at least on IE. Firefox has a similar option. Not sure about Chrome.

It helps prevent crashes on my machine

You don't have to join. It is probably easier to go to catsofinstagram.com and click "archive" on the side. This restarts my display drive when using Edge every time.

Thanks for recommending the software rendering. I am going to try it.

No issues here. I downloaded the Win 10 iso with Threshold 2 and did a clean install of the OS. Scrolling through this page doesn't cause any driver errors .... yet :)

I started using Chrome a few days ago, which I have never used before, and have not had any display driver fails while browsing. Using Edge I get frequent fails. I'm going to stick with Chrome until an update resolves this issue with my SP4 and Edge.

YES. I think Edge is the root of about 75 percent of the SP4's woes. By using Chrome and Firefox I've eliminated about three quarters of the issues I've had, and the display driver has not crashed once on me since dumping Edge.

so the Recovered from Display driver error bug is finally gone as of today, as in it doesn't pop up, but the problem now is that my screen wouldn't actually recover instead it becomes unresponsive to touch. :/ I would have preferred it recovering instead of this problem now.

I tried this site again and this time I did a couple of driver crashes :) So ... it's pretty reproducible now.

So just got a sp4, installed everything and got the driver stopped notice...is there an official fix for this?

Just an update: I still get occasional crashes with Chrome, even after all the latest updates. Doesn't happen too often, but it has crashed 2-3 times in the past few days. Doing nothing special, just opening this forum...
