Stream 7 doesn't seem to be able to connect to windows update

[Windows Central Question]

Hi, found this tablet in the back of a cabinet at work and wanted to get it going. I did the recovery process to restore the original OS, and now when I try to update the win 8.1 OS that's on it, the update control panel says 'checking for updates' with the five little dots sliding left to right, forever. It's been behind me on the bench for over two hours doing this now.

It's on the network, and I can browse to websites, etc., but neither windows update or windows defender seems to be able to reach the update servers.

Any ideas?

Hi Welcome to windows Central! There are a lot of updates to install if you restored back to factory. This may take awhile. I would give it some more time and see what happens. If you need more help, please join the forum!

It's now been running over night with no change. I think it can't find the servers.

Hi! I don't think it's going to complete. I did a search and it seems that there are problems updating to w8.1 Here's a link. See if any thing here helps.

It already has 8.1 on it, but it's a couple of years old now. I'm trying to get the updates for 8.1 that have been released since, but nether Windows update or Windows Defender seem to be able to contact update servers.

Hi ! Are you saying that Windows Defender will not down load the definitions updates?? What have you done from the the link I provided to solve this issue, beside posting updates are not able to contact to the update server? Please attach your update history. Nothing, as that link is talking about upgrading from win8 to win8.1. This device already has win8.1 on it, it's just stale and needs updating.

There is no windows update history to attach. The unit has no windows updates, and doesn't seem to be able to get them.

It's online, I can browse to websites with no problems. I can get HP updates through the HP Support Assistant.
