Stream Surface to TV

Has anyone discovered a way to wirelessly stream the Surfaces desktop to a projector?

Like multiple desktops in mirror mode?

the iPad was able to do it through the appleTV and airplay thing, Im trying to convince my work to ditch this plan and go with the Surface. BUT, this one feature is the deal breaker here!

If the projector can speak to the devices charm on the surface than sure.

if it can't, then no.

You can always get a projector that has wireless built in. If you didn't need wireless then you could just use the HDMI output.

I know you can stream music to the XBox similar to how an iPad/Apple TV would, but not sure about output from the Surface. Would be nice though.

with a laptop? yes, using the same method that the iPad / AppleTV combo works though. sending signal from one PC to another wirelessly, then to a projector.

You can get a wireless VGA adapter. It's USB on the Surface end, and VGA or HDMI on the wireless end that would connect to the projector. The only thing I'm unsure of is if the USB drivers would work on the RT, but I don't see why not. It supports thousands of devices, just need to find one that works.

I don't suppose someone has a Surface they can bring in for testing?

Yes, there are two ways. One, use an Xbox just like an appletv. Two, use a device with DLNA that's supported by Surface. If you go into a Microsoft store with your Surface tablet you will see various devices, including tvs to connect to wirelessly.

The DLNA / Xbox solution is most likely not an option, because that can only display media.

If you want anything that is not video or audio, like for example a PowerPoint presentation or something, then you need a physical cable.

But then, it depends on what type of place he's talking about using it for work at.

Well, if it's an MP4, WMV, or any other video that the Xbox Video player on the Surface plays, then you can stream that to an Xbox easily.

But like I said, if you want to show your desktop being used live (like showing a Word document, or showing a PowerPoint, or anything of that sort), then it's not possible to do so on the Surface unless you connect to a VGA or HDMI input on the TV.

Also, I'm not quite sure how viable of an option it is to have the Xbox interface displaying in a classroom before you stream content to it. It might be just a little bit of a distraction.

Have you considered using ScreenBeam? Cheaper than apple tv and doesn't require wifi to pair devices.

is the iPad -apple the combo capable of streaming anything else other that media (audio, video, and images)? It didn't know I could use keynote wirelessly without the need for an adaptor... I don't think I've see apple do it either at a press conference.

I used to use my iPad in meetings, which was lame... My surface rt has been a better solution. We quit using projectors at work and at my church in favor of large monitors. I opted over wireless HDMI connections in both cases for stability. It is all very simple to connect the surface and much more capable that the ipads...

Yes, AirPlay has a Mirroring option to mirror almost any app.

That being said, Windows 8.1 will bring Miracast support to devices that support that. We still don't know yet if the Surface RT will include Miracast support, but the Pro does.
