Stuck in Update one more casualty, I guess

Please let me know one thing, when the gears are moving the phone is not connected to the wifi, right? Because my phone is not connected as of now. The download of the updates was pretty fast though. After this ominous looking gears showed up although these two gears are moving in "vicious cycle" but the status bar is still stuck at the intial position. How to ascertain that the update is happening ? My wifi doesn't show any known device connected to it......
Am I stuck? Please help somebody.

Thanx a lot.My L-920 now looks gorgeous. The notification center is awesome. It shows all my pending mails and messages including my office mails on Outlook. I will not take the unnecessary risk of installing the "elusive" Cortana lest the Store should get unavailable for me I can live with that or rather without that.
BTW, The Microsoft Camera is also pretty cool though the interface is nothing like Nokia Camera but it seems the pics taken now after the 8.1 update seem to be sharper, I could be wrong but a few of my colleagues did vouch for that.
