Another ridiculous thing to happen to my Surface 2, after my TypeCover 2 just sporadically decides when and when not to work.

The same thing has happened to my surface 2 today. It can no longer play avi or mp4 or any audio files that it was able to play a week ago. Have you been able to fix this problem yet? Anyone that can help would be muchly appreciated.

Had the same problem. Try to refresh Windows. Fixed it for me. Let us know if that works for you too.

Try this:
Right click on sound icon in taskbar > playback options
Double click on ’speakers"
Click on "advanced" tab
UNTICK "enable audio enhancements"
Apply and restart surface
The problem seems to be with audio firmware

Im looking into buying the surface rt but one thing i cant figure out is if it plays .avi files without any formating. I download a lot of torrent movies, seems like i can do that with some torrent apps but not sure if it plays .avi

so i guess my question is a simple one,,, does the surface 2 play .avi files?

Check for updates!
An update called "system hardware update" has fixed the faulty driver and your surface should again playback files normally.

I do not have any problems playing any type of files including AVI and MKV.

The best app for that Purpose to me is PowerDVD.
