There most likely won't be a release date this year, perhaps not even next year. The real answer is "when it's ready". Which I fully support because there are few things as confusing to consumers and as frustrating to fans as launching a product before it's ready (Windows 8 anyone?). Also, this approach has worked very well for other companies (Apple and Wizards of the Coast come to mind).

yeah youre right, the thinking at the surface team is "when its ready". the demand with the fans is there, but they are trying to make it right to wow everyone. how does it apply to apple and wizards of the coast though?

Just curious: are there any other long time DMs out there who want a Surface Laptop for organizing and running adventures? I know I do. A Surface Pro might actually be better, but I'm used to working with a laptop so I think it would be easier for me.

what is a DM? i think the surface laptop is better for "lapability" so if youre traveling a lot (especially in public trains) it would be a more comfortable experience. on the plus side for the surface pro, if youre doing a lot of map tracking or plotting journeys then the surface pro would be good as then you can easily zoom in and out to locations and jot notes. or am i totally off of what a DM is? haha. :sweaty:

I hope that Microsoft is making a serious effort to improve the reliability and the number of extensions for edge. I would have thought by now there would have been a better selection of edge extensions.

When you are placing Windows 10 S on a premium laptop, one should expect the web browser to work close to flawlessly and have a good number of extensions available.

Exactly. I tried switching from chrome to edge because I heard edge doesn't drain battery as much but could'nt live without all my chrome extensions. If I would be forced to use edge, it better be be the full package.

hey grizzlystrong, what are some extensions that you want in edge? for me id be totally okay with just enpass, although my solution of copying passwords from the uwp app then pasting is working fine. im not a heavy extension user but i agree that more should be available in edge. in this situation, since extension support is there could it be the extension developers at fault for not making/converting them rather than microsoft?

The thing about the Surface Laptop (and by extension Windows 10 S) though is that it is aimed at expanding the Windows Store considerably by getting OEMs to target the education sector with low cost devices that run Windows 10 S. Through those devices and the incentive developers have to reach the end users, the Windows Store will begin to grow as more Win32 apps are packaged as UWP. Microsoft's play here is for the long game. They're hoping that once developers use the Desktop Bridge and meet with success there, they will fully convert their apps to UWP over time and thus the number of apps available on Windows 10 Mobile will grow indirectly.

Good info.... However, it is a highly ambitious project(kind of impossible) to get an app support that is equally huge and diverse as android/ios.

all of this can/will tie in to the surface phone if one will be released. hardware-wise i cant even dream of what the surface phone could do or look like, but i hope its a game changer. for the mobile space, which like you said failed miserably, they truly need something ground breaking to succeed. it definitely is possible, but takes a lot of thought and effort especially when the competition is so strong.

The way microsoft is progressing, I am very hopeful of the surface phone devices. This line of product has to be something like first iphone that was launched jn 2007... Something new & wow

i agree with you. microsoft is not going to compete with a typical phone as android is and will dominate that space, but something as incredible as the iphone when it was first introduced would greatly increase demand of a mobile surface product. cant wait to see what the surface team is coming up with to fill that demand.

thats the thing, no matter the industry there will always be a new "king" as the only other way to go when a brand is on the top is down. if a company cannot adapt, they will get taken out and taken out hard (as in losing millions in revenue). there are devices from OEMs that do dual boot of android and windows, but i am sure microsoft is not going to make android-running devices. they will make software for android, but not products running android. im confident the surface team will do something very interesting, if they do decide to make a phone, but until then we just have to wait and see.

Yeah i guess you are right... Microsoft has put in alot of resources and money to build good mobile hardware and to attract developers.... Supporting android wouldn't have been more challenging that pushing/expanding its own platform. Surface phone will definitely be something interesting.

What are the extensions in particular that you are looking for. I use chromes but not much of extension user so no aware. Would be interesting to see what else is there and its use case.

thanks. they put a lot of money and a lot of thought into the products they make, and its quite obvious when looking at what the surface team produces. therefore, they will put a lot of thought into a phone when/if one comes out from that team. hopefully the consumer appreciates and buys that product.

There is no clarity on the surface phone launch. As per rumours Microsoft was expected to announce surface phone on 23rd May. But all MS fans(incl me) were left disappointed as I was thinking to pick and chose between oneplus 5 & Surface Mobile.
Seems like I'll have to go for oneplus 5 now.

hey again. the alcatel idol 4s is a good option too. the price of that phone has come down recently. if you want to stay in the windows 10 mobile environment id say buy that one instead.

Hey thanks for your suggestion. I checked the specs and it looked pretty decent option for that money. To have me switch to windows mobile environment MS has to repeat history (like apple did in 2007). :)

hey there. now that windows 10 s is becoming a thing, where the user is limited to just one location where they can get apps (windows store), im sure the app availability will steadily grow. companies want to target many users, and if these users branch out to windows 10 s then the companies want to target that audience also. microsoft overcut the competition by making a premium laptop, but realistically a school will probably not buy thousands of those surface laptops for their students to use. rather, like you said microsoft is trying to get OEMs to target the education sector and get those companies to sell to schools and students. its an interesting cohesion of windows 10 s and even cheaper electronics than current day because its still running a great OS, but one that im sure will pay off. especially when it comes to schools that bulk order devices, the less they have to worry about security, failing electronics due to viruses, etc. the better.

Hi. I think you're right , but they need to sell a lot of devices also to students and kids outside schools. I agree that many schools will buy low cost devices whit a great and secure OS like windows 10 S ( and like as you sad before not thousand of surface laptop due to his cost ). The problem is that schools don't download many apps, but just what they need , whereas kids and students ,outside the school , download many games, education app and many other apps. More apps people download ,more apps are develop. So , in my opinion , windows must target also people outside education ( with both expensive devices and low cost ones ) to convince a lot of creators to add their app in the store. Creators need to see advantages.
