Surround / 5.1 recording

Interesting, though 5.1 does not necessarily equal better quality than stereo. If you truly record in 5.1 and you have a 5.1 speaker setup, then you could get some cool 3D audio. But, probably not from just the phone, it doesn't have a 5.1 output and I don't know if bluetooth audio supports 5.1. Maybe with a USB DAC. But from a PC with the appropiate connections sure. But 3D audio and audio quality isn't the same. And maybe stereo recording does use the different microphones for noise filtering etc so if it foes that's cool and helps with quality. though as I said in that other thread, the 5.1 microphones I've seen are quite expensive and much bigger than a cellphone.

To be honest, I think they should work on Dolby Atmos instead(Used by some films and recently in a game called Overwatch), which creates binaural audio for stereo output. Sounds extremely good. With current hardware I'd say it might be possible as this is software processed.

Not much point in Atmos because few people have a PC sound chip that can decode it. You'd need an external home theatre system connected. Also, best reason to use Atmos it for over 5.1 channels and the phones just don't have the mics for that. A couple of other points to note, Atmos would require a licence payment for each user so would likely be a paid upgrade whereas (at least, for the 930/1520) we have already bought a Dolby Digital licence with the phone. May be a charge for 950 owners if MS did not include the licence with the original W10. Also, to address an earlier comment, WM10 does still include Dolby Headphone surround which reads the 5.1 track rather than just Prologic but of course this will use a 3D system to produce the sound. Remember though, 3D surround in headphones coming from a true 5.1 sound source sounds just as good as discrete speakers. The wave pattern produced is the same.

Additional: I just don't understand why they don't make it easy to get the previous camera app on these phones whilst they think about getting the new one working properly. What's the reason? Do they just want to peeve as many customers as they can manage? I can't see the benefit for MS in restricting us like this. At this rate, W11 will be out before they get around to fixing things.

There is no 5.1 recording setting, that's the point of this thread. You need to hack in the old camera app to get it.
