I knew about the M8 before I purchased my Icon. I went with the Icon mainly because I like the look / design of it and because I am not a fan of the HTC One and M8 speaker system. It makes the phone much larger than the screen size would dictate.
I played around with a 1520 in an AT&T store and while it was a very nice phone, that thing was huge.. And I mean huge! It made my Icon look like a toy..
I used to have a Galaxy Note II. It was nice and I thought it would be useful, but it was way to big for my needs. So instead of staying in the Android ecosystem, I moved to the 928, and now the Icon. I've played with the 1520 and I agree that it is a nice phone, but way to big. I think the 4.5" - 5" screen size range is the sweet spot. Most people can handle it one handed, and you get really good resolution. Anything bigger is just overkill (and possibly somebody compensating :smile
