It says to keep 1.5GB of space free so the update proceeds smoothly. In MB, that's 1536MB.

Nope. only the 63x and 930 are preloaded with Cyan (which includes 8.1).

So, today I was checking for the update and I found something interesting: My 1020 firmware is higher than the one listed at the Nokia site... But I have Black update. What does this mean?
Nokia site FW: 3051.40000.1345.1001
My 1020 FW: 3051.40000.1347.0001

How often was this asked and answered? The DP8.1 is the same than the official release so you don't need anything more than cyan, which is the firmware from Nokia/Microsoft.

My phone is UK CV (Lumia 920), but I bought it locked (on contract) to Tesco/O2 UK. Will I get the update direct from Nokia, or will I have to wait for my network to dish it out to me?

If it's a CV phone and ROM then you shouldn't be at the mercy of the network release schedules. Though if it's a contract phone and locked to a network I would have thought it would have an O2 ROM (since Tesco runs on O2's network).

go to settings->about

In there, the "Carrier" string will be what your/network has detected as your carrier. CV GBIE will be "Country Variant" and you'll have to wait for Nokia to issue the update when it's cleared testing.
