unable to download apps

Hi everybody,I know i'm a bit of a Luddite with these smart phones but my son gave me a lumia 630 and I am still struggling with it when i plug it into my pc (an old xp one) all i can get are pictures,i cant transfer files music ect from pc to phone, it asks me to install hardware automatically but then says it can't install the hardware, also i cannot download any apps all i get are error codes like for example the lumia selfie it gives me an error code 80070490 it gives different error codes for different apps.
ps i can take piccys,send texts,and use facebook,google ect on it .
please help if you can,if there is an idiots guide to the damn thing please direct me

You have to have Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Media Player 11 for the drivers to load using XP.
try doing a soft reset to see if the errors are gone
otherwise hard reset
