Fist of all, the only reason to have an unlocked phone is to use it on another network. This will not change your update cycle at all.

If you want to check if the phone is unlocked then try different SIMs. If they work, your phone is unlocked.

This dialer code may work but not always to check for unlocked - ##7820#

To unlock your phone contact your carrier or use a third party.

What do you mean by unlocking? Rooting? Carrier unlocking? Dev unlock?

What I really mean is:
Anytime I switch the "Use only 3G" ON in the network+ settings of my phone and restarts my phone (as required). I would have the second sim locked immediately after restarting, meanwhile I'd be able to use 3G network as I want it on the selected sim for mobile data connection.
