Update to Windows 10 AGAIN after wiping hard drive?

I have been struggling with a pretty nasty virus lately and I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve the issue. Sadly it did not. Now my question is whether I can wipe everything of the hard drive except the OS (which would also mean going back to Windows 7) and install Windows 10 again afterwards?

Do a clean install, that will possibly help, but if you do an install and keep certain files, the chances are the virus will remain in your system
