Volume control problems when using phone

I have a Lumia 610 running Windows 7.8. Recently, when using the phone for calls, the volume control goes over to the speaker phone scale of 1 to 10 even though I am not using the speaker phone setting. When not using the phone for a call, it reverts back to the normal 1 to 30 range.
This gives me the problem that the sound is distorted on the lowest 1/10 setting and no sound if I turn it down any further!!

I don't have a solution for your problem, but FYI it has always 1-10 in calls.
