Warren says Windows RT and WP is getting android apps. Perfers WP have malware

Its going to be interesting to see what MS is going to do because they don't make money on all of their services. If they move away from windows I am not sure where they are headed. They just completely blew this whole mobile devices area, hard.

If Windows Phones can run Android Apps, why do I need a Windows Phone. I would expect that using Android apps on Windows Phones would be a compromise of some sort. Why wouldn't I just buy an Android phone and run these apps under the OS and hardware they were intended to be used on?

This makes no sense to me at all.

I don't believe that this will mean that WP will have access to all of the apps in the Google Play store.

I think what will happen is that developers will be able to just copy over their Android apps and publish them in the Windows store. They would still have to pass the certification of the Windows store.

Yes it probably means the death of native apps but we get most of the apps out there.

Depends what is more important to you.

Guys... Believe me... Nevet, but never... Windows Phone will not get Android apps.
This is it. OS's have totally different coding programs so it cannot just happen to install an Android app on WP even if you are technicallly allowed by Microsoft. You just can't. It's impossible. This needs a huge change to the operating system by Microsoft, regarding DirectX kill and bringing OpenGL. This will never happen. So stop wondering around guys.

Actually that's why the rumor says it will be emulated like it is on Blackberry

Re: Android apps supposedly coming to WP: A thought

When I heard that maybe WP would become compatible with Android apps, I was turned off and thought this rang the end of Windows Phone. Why keep a platform alive if companies don't even have to make apps for it? I really thought it would be the death of WP and started looking at the price of iPhones.

Then I thought of it differently.

WP is first and foremost a user experience, an ecosystem if you will. The general experience itself is quite different to that of Android. But it is just that: an experience, a feeling, a way of using this tool that is the smartphone. Something that you can, yes, tweak Android to LOOK like but never imitate or surpass. Android has its own ecosystem with Google in the middle of it all with Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Play and so on. WP is the same with Outlook and the Microsoft Store.

But there's one thing lacking with Windows Phone that many complain about: apps. Most companies (not all I know) either create subpar apps that they don't even bother updating (Instagram, Vine) if any at all (Flipboard, Google services). For example, the two radio stations I listen to the most have an iPhone and an Android app. My bank, same. The news paper I read the most, same. And so on...

Now given that Microsoft cannot force companies to invest in creating and maintaining apps (because lets not forget that an App costs money to develop and maintain even when they are free), if the rumours are true, they decided to take matters in their own hands to bring us, their users, the apps we want with their features.

So where's the harm really? All those who really like WP will not cross over to Android or iPhone because of it. They won't have to. They will have all that they need on the WP platform.
Where's the harm? There has NEVER been a scenario where OS "A" expands support to include executables from OS "B" and "A" thrives and grows. Never.

It happened with OS/2. IBM faced with the app gap included support for Win16 apps, then for Win32 apps. The results... developers never really developed native OS/2 apps and the OS soon ended up retreating from the consumer space to the embedded systems space. Similar thing with Blackberry. It might put the OS on life support for a little longer, but it won't thrive.

Adding support for Android apps in WP will be a kick in the teeth to developers who invested time, money, and energy into developing native WP apps. It would also guarantee that native WP app development would cease (after the current projects have been completed). Why go through the effort of developing for WP when you can develop for Android and hit the entire Android market (and WP market)?

Plus, to all those calling the end of WP, do you really think MS would invest so much in developing Cortana if it was about to pack it in and just create Android phones? Again, developing such a complex system costs money and Microsoft did not become a company worth and generating billions by throwing money out the windows (no pun intended).
Yes, I do. Change in leadership results in change in priorities. Microsoft released the Zune HD. Immediately after release, the Zune HD was in maintenance mode... 3 quick firmware updates to fix bugs within the first 2 months after release, then one final update 5 months later.

Microsoft expended a lot of resources on the Zune app store, only to see a relative handful of apps released... and in a little over a year, formally discontinuing the Zune line. The investment in Cortana pales greatly in comparison to the investment that Microsoft made in just the Zune HD alone (I won't include Zune 30, 80, and 120)

No, if this happens, we wont get the Google Play Store. No way. Developers still have to submit the App to WP Marketplace.

Blackberry allowed sideloading, and later OTA installs. I doubt we'll see either of those on WP, if this happens. And the ability to sideload and OTA install is huge for free Apps. No waiting for the Apps to be submitted. Frankly, I hope this never happens. Been there on Blackberry, don't want it. It just allows developers (mostly the major developers, not small time devs) to be lazy and not build native Apps.

Well, duh. Everyone knows that Android apps can't just run in WP. There are however ways to get around that. It is technically possible to make this happen.

Lol.

Just because you don't know how to run Java on other platforms doesn't mean it can't live outside of an Android device.

Sure it can. If you know what you are doing.

Perhaps you should you should go back and learn alot more about programming before saying something like that.

This is not web pages or Desktop applications programming that we're talking about. But systems internals,

You wont find the answers on Wikipedia either. You better start writing your Own Operating System from scratch.

You need a link?
Never said Java couldn't run on other mobile OS. I said, it doesn't. Learn to read. And it isn't a matter of "knowing what you're doing", either. Java, currently, will not run on iOS, WP, or RT. There is no JVM for any of those three platforms, so how could it run? It can't, and it won't. Java is platform independent, that is true. But only, if you have a JVM installed. It is the same situation with Flash (with ActionScript), and C#. They're platform independent, if you've got a plugin installed (flash's case). The above three platforms, and most mobile OS in general, don't. Which is why I called Java, "desktop platform independent".

I think it is you who needs to go back and learn more about programming, because you clearly know nothing. So, to recap: no matter what you think you know, Java WILL NOT run without a JVM. iOS, WP, and RT DO NOT have a JVM built into the OS anywhere, so it is not a matter of systems internals. End of discussion.

There are still big incentives for native development, and Microsoft can add more incentives with a simple set of rules. For example:

*For native apps, Microsoft takes only 20% of the revenue until 2020. The current fee is 30%.
*For Android apps they take 40% of the revenue.
*After one year in the store, the fee is increased to 50% for Android apps with more than xx downloads or xx revenue
*Native apps, already in the store, with xx number of downloads or xx revenue, can't be replaced by Android apps.
*Important apps from top services are subsidized by Microsoft to develop a quality app.
*Android apps are penalized by 30% in the relevance algorithm for searching the store. Native apps take the top places when the user search.

So, Facebook can't replace their native Instagram app with their Android app because the have more than xx downloads.
Snapchat is allowed to add their Android app to the store, but they get only 60% of the revenue, after a year they'd get only 50% because they'd easily cross the limit of xx downloads.
Small apps can go Android forever.

WP doesn't need to have a complete native experience. They should concentrate in getting 80% of the actual usage time with quality native apps. Everything else can be Android.

I think he was just trolling. There's no way that Microsoft is actually working on getting Android apps to work on Windows phone, if that's even possible.

He isn't trolling at all. It has been rumored for some time now, several tech blogs have reported that. And it's easily possible, as all it takes is a Java Runtime Environment. Apps and games on Android require the very same thing. Consider it sort of an emulator. Even Windows Mobile had one, a pretty stripped down one though.

This is the problem with programmers of today. Excuses, excuses, excuses. 😊

Lol, no JVM. Rip, Rip, Rip.

So what? You are the programmer so implement it.

Have a nice day.

Back to the Original Post.

A very nice thread is going on here. Thanks OP for this thread. My bad for the derailment.
