WC 1M Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I'm debating whether I should get it or not.
Enjoy. While i think it's a nice device, I still am not a fan of the company.

I'm waiting until next weekend before i start to clean house. I'm finally glad to be out the game officially.

How does it feel to be done for a while?

It also sounds like you have made some decisions as well here.

I'm permanently done after this. I still read to track the news and such, but after next weekend once everything goes, that's it for me.

Nice! Sounds like you're in a good place. I'm guessing you found the devices that best hit the spot for you for your needs so the rest can go.

I'd like to think so.

The next project is to restore that HTC 10 I have tucked away, S-OFF it and update it to 8.0 (it's the forgotten t-mobile variant I picked up).

I'd like to get an updated Q Explorist, but I'll wait to see if Fossil puts the 3100 in the gen 5 ones. Otherwise, I'll get a gen 4 sometime next year.

Nice, sounds like a good plan to me with both things.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro impressions after 3 weeks of use.

Screen is amazing, sunlight readability is excellent. I like that it doesn't have curved glass, makes the screen protector stick to the edges without issues.

Battery life is superb. Easy to get 6.5hr + SOT on a long day or even 5 hour SOT across two days. Impressive.

Size is great considering it packs a 6" screen. Smaller than the Pixel 2XL. Weight distribution is excellent.

FPS is super fast. Audio output is surprisingly very very good despite not having front facing speakers.

EMUI allows dark mode in settings, phone, messages etc. Along with Google's push for dark mode in You Tube, News etc, I am a happy camper.

Camera is good, NOT great. Daytime photography is excellent but color balance is a bit off. Night time still photography is good. Moving pictures are an issue. Pictures from a plane (takeoff and landing) are downright mediocre. Takes a lot of effort to coax out a good picture.

#donglelife is here to stay.

Very surprised with this device. I will be switching to the Pixel 3 by Thursday or so.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Apparently they had a chef on-site who prepared lunch for us and they served wine as well. The French are a bit different that way
Yes the French way is a bit different. We've only been here a year and we're still learning. I've heard French office culture is a bit different so I'll have to go in with an open mind.

The good news is that it appears to be business casual there (from what I saw) so that's good. Just need to find out the dress code so I can buy clothes!

I've lost weight and got rid of my old office clothes which don't fit anyway.

I went to wear my old suit that I wore to interviews in the past and it looked like I was playing dress up in daddy's clothes... Had to buy a new one.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Once you said Versailles, you couldn't avoid the snobbiness.

Enjoy it.
We're probably not going to live in Versailles. Too many tourists...

We're still sorting out where to live. Not going to be easy to get something long term without a long term contract.

At this stage we're looking at a AirBnB for a month and then find something a bit more permanent. At least that's the plan. We'll see.

Nice review. Not surprised. I guess you see why i was looking at one - if the jack was any good, I'd have gotten the Mate 10.

Didn't figure you liked the touristy snobbiness (more local snobbiness is better).

I'd like to see France one of these days. My friend who taught there and one of my favorite old clients really liked it. One of my old attendings' wife is French (Brittany) so I should go see.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

See, there's a lot more places I'd like to travel and experience. I know 99 travels a ton for work...

...I just feel that I have to be picky where i go as the world isn't as welcoming in some ways as people think. There are parts here in the US I'd like to see and there are places that's unsafe to go. The fact that i have to think about this is telling. While i understand that being from the Western European slant of things makes it easier to go places (and that there are places where this isn't welcomed), it is my lack of that type of cache that makes me have to be a lot or wary (and thus prepared) of certain parts of the travel experience.

France for the most part is a welcoming place. Not saying it's perfect and doesn't have faults but in general people are nice.

Best thing to do is to have some French language when visiting, be polite (big thing in France) and things will be fine.

Paris is a big city with big city problems. People outside Paris are generally different. Saying that we meet some nice people in Paris. The French can be blunt and not the best with some niceties which is where this idea of rude French comes from. Service is very different than USA. That goes for Europe in general.

I haven't spent much time in Brittany but a lot of people say it's lovely, especial in summer.

So my advice, give yourself time, go to Paris, but get out to smaller towns and other areas. France is very diverse.

When it comes to snobby, it's only about certain things, I'm not a snob in general. I grew up pretty poor and I'm far from being rich. Just lucky to get a decent paid job.

I know you're just giving me a hard time.

When I was growing up I wanted nothing to do with New York city. I was actually scared to go to it due to its reputation.

I've now been there three times and I no longer have that fear.

Not saying there isn't places I won't go to because of reputation but I've learned that you can't go by everything you hear. Often people who get themselves into trouble are the biggest talkers.

I grew up in Toronto. When I moved out I found people had this idea of what Toronto was like. I was a bit shocked at how skewed their perception was all based on others opinions. My Toronto was nothing like their perception or in some cases their experience. Some people go out of their way to get into trouble it seems...

I know you have other things to contend with but that shouldn't stop you from doing or seeing things. Life's too short for that.

I agree. I don't think it will stop me from travelling and seeing some of the places that I want to. It's just that I don't get to blindly walk into a lot of places in the world as easily as some people. Even in the most friendly of parts there is always that twinge of difference that isn't as slanted in my favor.

Perhaps that's just the SW in me that'll never go away talking.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Just found out two of my favorite artistes (Sting and Shaggy) did a collaboration this year. I like what I heard, so I'll get the album for a listen.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Thanks!

I'm an electrical design engineer. I'll be working on cathodic protection of an offshore facility.

That's all I know at this stage.
Congratulations! That sounds like a great opportunity.

Luckily or unluckily I still fit in my clothes from 20 years ago, lol.
However with each passing year it is difficult to maintain the weight and girth.
I finally started to ride my bike a bit more regularly, hopefully that will help. I ride a 6 mile loop around the house with a lot of uphill climbs.
