WC 1M Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So I finally got some time in with the S10 and HMD 9 today.

Both phones remind me of LG's V series ironically in different ways. Th S10 has this lightweight feel that's really reminiscent of the V30/V40. It is well designed and the ergonomics again has a V30/V40 feel. The screen is very nice and punch hole is a bit more tolerable for me than on the S10E. I'm not a fan visually of the One UI look. I see that Samsung also used some icons to switch between all three lens that are reminiscent of the ones LG uses to change between its cameras in the app.

I can see why lots of people like the S10E, but it's not for me. Just don't like the look and in hand feel at all.

As for the HMD/Nokia 9, it's impressive that for me it's a mix between a 1020 and a V30. I appreciate the design choice for the G7/V40 in terms of how narrow it is. The S10 is in between the V40 and V35, width wise. It wasn't as slightly narrow as the S8 & S9 series. The Nokia 9 does have a lightweight feel, reminiscent of the V30/V35/V40 and width wise, it's very similar to those V series models.

The screen is really, really nice. That impressed me a ton. The color of the phone is similar to the one Huawei used for their blue on the Mate 10 Pro. Not a fan of Pie navigation.

I'm concerned about the battery and the non video audio quality. It may need some software updates to shorten the processing time to save pictures and the fingerprint sensor. But it is interesting enough to use for me. Just needs to be cheaper.

Good, I'm glad that you finally got to check those out. It sounds like it was worth it for you to check out the Nokia 9.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So I've been having a hell of a time with my Android TV.

Did the update to 8 then had issues so reset it. Then it had even more issues.

Finally got around to downloading the firmware to a USB drive and doing things that way. To make life interesting I even had issues with the USB drive!

Appears to have fixed everything though.

8 is a lot nicer on the TV and it's a lot smoother.

So I'm happier now.

Interesting about the 9. I haven't checked to see if it's out here yet.

Will be nice to have a look at it.

I think you're right about the need for updates.

Personally I think the camera needs it's own processor. I thought the same about the 1020 at the time.

Spoke too soon...

Still having issues... Sigh.

Guess I'll have to reset yet again and hope that works.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So I went down the rabbit hole for the Nokia 9. Of course, Amazon is sold out. BH and Best Buy have it but it is back up to $699.

An excerpt from one of the reviews - posted below - is what gives me pause. But I can see myself using this is a secondary device to capture specific images that I know I will edit in post processing.

Quote
The main issue with the camera is how long it takes to process photos. You thought the Pixel 3 took a long time? That's nothing. The Nokia 9 has to crunch together data from five 12MP cameras, and that takes about 20 seconds per photo. Taking more than one photo in quick succession is virtually impossible because of the shutter lag, and extended processing is murder on system performance. Sometimes I'll think I've taken a photo only to find the phone was unable to save it because it was bogged down processing the last one.

I'm stick to my assessment that a secondary processor is required for cameras like this.

You don't need to use all five cameras all the time though.

I think each camera is getting unique information that helps the RAW data file. But yes a secondary processor (similar to Pixel Core) is necessary and Nokia should have gone with the SD855 instead of the SD845 in the phone.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

On a side note I am going to test drive Android Q Beta on my Pixel 3XL starting this week.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

And yes at some point I will do a mini review of my S10+. I have been using it for almost two weeks now.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I'm not interested in any camera reviews right now for the Nokia 9. Call me after a few months and the first update hits.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Perhaps I'm in the minority, as I just feel that the camera on the N 9 is like the Lumia 1020 and Pureview 808, where it's such a showcase feature that trying to shoehorn it into every set up is really doing it a disservice. In the right hands, even the 808 now can still take some very good shots.

If I look at it from a certain lens, the lack of micro SD/the 128GB storage is concerning. If they had gone the 256GB route for the same $699, it would have been more appealing for me. But I don't think they designed it to be a camera that you fully push, as they would have added more storage and ultimately a bigger battery. I wish they would have put in OIS in all lens, but Pixel 1 showed us what good EIS can do for video. Android one is a nice touch, I just would have preferred being able to switch the display resolution to 1080P and the nav bars back to the three button layout.

Would I use one as a daily driver? Sure. I really, really like the screen. It impressed me as much as the one on the XZ3. I turn on reading mode on all my screens so I was impressed at how well the screen on the N 9 looks. Am I excusing any shortcomings of the phone? No. To me the shortcomings are storage, battery size, audio for music, OIS. I just feel not everyone is looking at the phone in the appropriate context and trying to compare it to all sorts of other offerings based on the price point.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I think the S10e would make a nice upgrade for the GF from the Note 5. Size wise, I think the S10 is the best fit for her, but I don't think she'll be as forgiving with the optic finger print sensor. I remember how harsh she was with the Note 5's reader initially. Even now I still see her use her PIN periodically. Also, not sure about her and the curved display. Surprising to see that so far the S10 has the worst battery life of the three.

But she's been with Verizon for as long as I have been with t-mobile (over 10 years), so I she can get a good deal if she decides to grab one. I would have suggested the s10+, but I don't think she'll got for the palm rejection issues and the optical fingerprint reader too well.

Don't think that Qualcomm's ISP was strong enough to handle the workload, hence the additional hardware piece Nokia added. Remember, for Nokia to have released this device now they spent a year working with the chip. Which means they got earlier access to it.

I wish they had dropped dual SD 845s in there. I just don't think the engineering was there yet though because they may likely needed to have leveraged both sets of ISPs had they added OIS on all 5 lens. Can you imagine this thing running a skinned Android? I doubt 12GB RAM would have been enough. I'm also surprised that the RAM count was so low...figured they'd go to 8 at the camera app running on 3GB alone when you use it.

I would recommend it if she doesn't mind the smaller footprint and the missing stylus. Looking at the size compare, it seems like the S10e is slightly bigger than the Note 5 when it comes to screen size.

Do you know if she uses her phone with her right hand or left for unlocking? It's not a huge deal but as a left hand phone user, the fingerprint on the side is a little tricker to use, it seems a little more ideal for those who use the right hand to do that.
