Welcome our newest Moderator

...Also, I've got to ask - why is everyone spamming likes and favourites I mean I think I get why but I had to ask.

I brought it over here from when I was mod over at TreoCentral. So blame me for it.

So the Apple event is about to happen (watch it here: Apple iPhone 5S 5C Event September 10th, Ustream.TV: Live Coverage of Apple Keynotes and other events in tech. Including Images, Commentary, and sometimes ...) ... do we expect an influx of trolls and or refugees after it?

Not here, probably over at iMore.

I really tried to like Apple after HP destroyed Palm, but the static screen was too much. Today's announcement by Apple is nothing really. A new iPad, a cheaper iPhone, colors and a new CPU. Their screens are still too small for today's marketplace

Addendum: I forgot the fingerprint sensor for locking the phone. can you imagine how many complaints Apples wil get that it doesn't work and people are locked out of their phone.

I was talking to my niece and showing her my l 1020. She told me have you heard about the new iPhone with the fingerprint scanner. I told her yes I've seen those before she said when and where. I told her in 2005 on my windows mobile phone...lol

So the "cheap" iPhone is still gonna run $99 dollars on a two year contract

Where do we stand on this - providing workarounds to load exclusive apps onto the phone?

Also I've been wondering about closing / merging threads. When does one approach fit better than the other? Also, what about the actual process of doing this - Do you close the thread then merge it into another? How does merging posts into the thread work - does it merge posts into an order you choose or tag the posts onto the end of the thread?

So many questions!

Try to merge as little as possible, or at least that's what they say in the mod lounge. If it's like the first post of a thread and should go in one of our existing topics, merge should be harmless and ok. If there are a few replies or a thread that has been around a day or two, the time lines can get jumbled when you merge. Best to close the thread and point them to one being steered to.

When in doubt, close the thread and either report it or discuss it here.

The post you linked is a known work around the WPC covered on the blog it is acceptable to discuss.

Merge vs close threads. You have to remember everything here is based on the time lines. If you merge 2 threads the OP will be the oldest post first post based on the time line. If you merge threads be mindful that posts will stay in the time line so the posts of one thread will mix with the posts of the other threads this could become confusing to people reading the thread. In most situations its better to close the thread. If you do close a thread post a link to the correct conversation thread that is open for posting.

In some situations like the "those leaving WP for another OS" threads we merge all of those threads into the sticky in the Other OS and devices forum. They are mostly troll threads anyways.

So if I'm reading it right, it's basically a case of - if the threads in question are further apart in the timeline always close the thread and link to the surviving thread - but if the threads are close together in the timeline or we're talking about moving single-post threads into bigger catch-all topics then it's fine to merge the thread.

To clarify, I just pick "merge thread" in the thread itself and select where to move the thread to and the posts go into the selected thread with the originating thread being closed or deleted?

Sometimes you have to be careful where it ends up when merging. You can ask Dave all about that. :winktongue:

What he said. What I did was use the merge to url method the problem is that the thread url you provide gets moved to the thread you are merging with not the other way around.

I have a friend (the person who actually introduced to these forums--originally Crackberry when I told him a got a Blackberry) who used iPhones from the 3 to the 4S. He uses Samsung Note 2 now and sent me a message saying he was bored by the new iPhones.

Okay so here's a slight update to my situation. First of all don't worry I'm not going anywhere!

I just landed a job for 4 weeks (temping) with normal 9-5 office hours. It's a admin role chasing people up for print jobs and it's not a creative or a design role but at least it's some paid work and experience if only for a guaranteed 4 weeks. I'll be looking for other work while in that role.

It won't really change anything about WPCentral and moderating, I'll still be around early morning and in the evening to chat and moderate on here. Just thought I'd keep everyone up to date.

I wasn't being rude at all - all this happened while I was away. I would have come with hoolhoops, band and DJ and party poppers for this! Welcome to the team :)
