What options are there for insuring a new iPhone?

We're slowing (and reluctantly) moving away from Windows Phones. My wife wants a "new" iPhone. (Technically not new. She wants an iPhone 8, which given today's announcements from Apple, now makes that one of last year's models. But it will be new to us.) Anyway, it costs more than any other phone we've ever purchased. We've never insured any phone we've bought before and that's worked out for us. However, given the cost of this thing, I'm considering getting some sort of insurance.

Only, I don't want to go with AT&T's insurance (our mobile carrier), as I'm sure that will be expensive, too. And right now we're not tied to AT&T, as in we're not locked into a contract. I'm guessing if we insured her new iPhone through AT&T, they'd want us to sign a contract. I'd rather not.

So, what other options are out there?

I went with T-Mobile. That's because there is a discount through my employer. Seems good, so far.

I would definitely consider Apple Care.
