WhatsApp - Adding International numbers

WhatsApp says on their website to add international users using the plus symbol (+) followed the country code.
I've been doing this with friends in the UK (I'm in Canada) - but whatsapp won't add them.

On the website it does say not to use a zero - but the plus sign instead. Problem is that in the people app you can't use the plus symbol.\\

Any thoughts?

In the mobile phone entry, hold 0 down... it will give you a plus sign.
