Sorry for dumb question...
When I tell cortana "start skype" or "start calculator", it starts those apps.
But not "start LinkedIn" or "start messaging" , though I have apps with such names installed. It does a bing search in these cases.
I'm frustrated - which apps I can start with "start" keyword and which not?

So it's not like WM 10 lexically / phonetically checks whatever you "start" vs installed apps list?

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to, I've opened installed apps with Cortana on WP 8.1 before, but 10's Cortana has been more unreliable than I'd like.

(I asked Cortana on an 8.1 phone, 10 phone and 10 PC each to show me nearby gas stations. Only Cortana on 8.1 showed me results and didn't error out.)

I think you should be able to open anything, though try saying 'Open ...', that usually works for me.

"Open" works - or doesn't - exactly the same as "start" - I checked. At least some stability here, otherwise it would add to frustration. :)

Try "www.linkedin.com" or "http://linkedin.com".
Obviously, won't start your apps ,but will allow you to launch some things.

The vocabulary needs to be extended for this to work properly. I haven't looked at the install specs for W10 apps, but I bet there's some metadata tags around this feature, to populate the vocabulary for non-inbox apps.

If you can find the table or similar, where this ends up, you can probably figure out how to manually add the values for these apps.

instead of saying "start", say "launch". It will 100% work
