Am I the only one pondering why release a surface laptop and not destroy the lower end market with quality hardware with a surface mini. Something with that sort of look, a $500 or lower price tag, free office, windows 10s, and a pen would destroy every tablet out there

Because for schools they need a physical keyboard.

The Surface Mini could still be coming at the event in China.

Tablets are on the down trend. Unless they can create a new category they aren't going to get into that market. I'm surprised they released the Surface Laptop though so maybe they will. We will have to see in like a week.

I would also like a Surface mini sort of device, but I feel like it could fail because of the lack of quality apps in the Windows Store.

I wish Microsoft would put a bit more emphasis on making Windows 10 even more touch-friendly, because currently, there are still many things left over from older versions which ruin the tablet experience.

Maybe their costs of production are higher than the already established and hardware-oriented companies like HP, Dell etc. So they would target higher end markets, but that being said, they are still lowering their prices with devices, which is a good indicator that you would be getting a budget device soon.
