Why are there mutiple phones?

Why can't Nokia just make one phone like the 920 and then the upgrade. Why is there a 925,928,929? So confusing

Each carrier gets the opportunity to carry an exclusive device, in the 920 or the 928. The 925 is slightly different, as it's the thin aluminum body.
