When I plug in my external hard drive, in "device and printers window," an icon for that device does show up along with other connected devices. However it does my show up in file folder, therefore I do not have access to my files in my external hard drive.

try another USB cable. I open my WD Element drive in my SP4 all the time. Didn't even need to load WD drivers.
