Why did my Surface keyboard type 1 stop lighting up?

I have had my Windows Surface tablet and type 2 keyboard for almost a year. A couple days ago I noticed the keyboard wouldn't light up when attached to the Surface. I checked the brightness and detached/reattached it, but it didn't help. My friend with the exact same Surface tablet and keyboard noticed her keyboard lighting failed less than a week ago. Coincidence or the same problem? Any way to fix it?

Do you have Windows Technical Preview? What Surface do you have (RT, Pro)?

It's the original Surface...that would be RT I guess because I know it's not Pro. What is Windows Technical Preview? I don't think I have it.

And I made a mistake, it's actually the type 2 keyboard.
