Why didn't my start screen sync?

Hello!

I just got a Lumia 1520 to (maybe) replace my 925. Lovely phones btw!

I already had 8.1 Preview on my 925 and expected everything, including my start screen (background and tile setup) to be synced to my new phone. I signed into my account on the new phone and was given the option to restore a backup from mid-april (I assume that's when I updated to 8.1). Given no other choice, I restored this backup. When it was completed I updated the 1520 to 8.1 Preview, and everything is still synced, except my start screen.

So... Why did that not sync? Should I have enabled theme sync, or is it because I had to restore the old WP8 backup before updating?

Hope someone can explain this! It's not a big problem to restore the start screen, I'm merely curious to why it did not do so by itself

Your 1520 needed to have Windows Phone 8.1 before being restored with the 925 backup. At least, that would be my explanation.

I was afraid that might be the explanation. But is there anyway to update to 8.1 Preview without restoring in WP 8 first?

^yea. just don't restore. then go into settings and check for update
