Why do I need a Groove Music Pass to play music I've already paid for elsewhere?

I downloaded some music from Amazon, and when I've transferred it to my new Windows 10 laptop it doesn't let me play them until I've bought a Music Pass. Why?

Groove plays local music files without a music pass. You should see them under Albums on the left.

I axed Groove and just use the good old Windows Media Player which is still included in Windows 10.

I recommend VLC Player. It plays any format.

I also recommend Exact Audio Copy if you want to rip your purchased CDs. I rip my CDs to FLAC format and play them using VLC Player. No additional plug-ins are needed to play FLAC and OGG formats using VLC Player.

VLC Player supports all platforms, desktop and mobile, too.
