Why does my display wake seconds after putting it to sleep?

If the cover isn't closed when I put my plugged-in Surface Pro 4 to sleep using the power button (settings are to put to sleep w/ power button when plugged in) the display wakes up about 10 seconds after I press the power button. It begins looking for me to sign in to Windows even though I've put it to sleep. I use my Surface Pro 4 plugged in as a tablet a lot, but every time I put it to sleep it wakes back up immediately. I've checked all the power settings and googled my issue, but can't figure it out. What's up?
