Why does my phone turn off when making a call

The touch screen on Lumia is so sensitive that it keeps activating hold or end call etc whenever I make a call (ie holding the phone to my ear touches the hold button). Can the screen be locked or made less sensitive?

Is the phone shutting off completely or is the screen just going dark?

Many upper end phones have a screen proximity sensor that will black out the screen when the device touches your face.
