Why Doesn't Wi-Fi Calling Work with 640 and WP 10?

I had to reinstall 8.1 to get WiFi calling to work on my 640. Even though there are settings for it in WP10, doesn't work for crap. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work on WP10? And if so, what is your secret?

I haven't tried it personally to see if it will work or not, but I wonder if this is somehow connected to the firmware.

WiFi calling is firmware specific. Outside of the iPhone, very few devices have ever had the ability to be unbranded by a carrier and still allow for WiFi calling. If you modify the existing software on a device or upgrade to a revision which was released by the carrier you are using, it likely won't work either.

This isn't anyone's fault, but rather a decision made by the carriers to restrict and have control over this feature. And to ensure you buy their phones.

Assuming you have a T-Mobile 640? It's been hit or miss on W10. I had it working with earlier builds a long time ago but it hasn't worked lately.

As others have said it's a firmware issue. It won't be fixed until T-Mobile releases an official W10 update with new firmware (if they ever do).

I highly doubt that T-Mobile is actively engaged in testing new firmware for the Lumia 640, a phone they barely kept as an active SKU in their system before unceremoniously shelving it. I preferred the glossy white over the matte black on the AT&T GoPhone version.

wifi calling not working is a know issue, microsoft engineers identified the problem months ago and submitted it to tmobile. tmobile has not yet certified the fix and released new firmware with the fix.

maybe they will maybe they wont ever release the fix (referring to tmobile)

if you want more info here is a link (search for posts by travis, he is a microsoft engineer on the wifi calling product team)
WiFi Calling and IMS Connection - Build 10166 and Lumia 640 - Microsoft Community

**edit to add:
im referring to wifi calling not working in win10. it works fine in 8.1

also sometimes you will hear people say "it worked for awhile in win10 and now it wont" or "i tested it and it worked for me in win 10" etc etc. the confusion comes from the fact that wifi calling often times works right after installing windows 10, but it won't survive the first reboot (the reasons why are all explained in the link above)

This is a bummer.

To downgrade or to just deal is the question. The answer depends on the individual. My DD, for the moment has Band 12 and VoLTE, and that band has allowed me to be okay without WiFi calling, so I don't think I will downgrade even though I have thought about it, lol.

If you're calling someone that has Skype, you could use Skype for the Wi-Fi calling, or another VOIP app. If you're calling a non-Skype number, you'll need minutes added to your account. If you've got Office 365, then you get 60 minutes per month free (not much there.) Just a thought.

I've never used anything for Wi-Fi calling nor had the need to. My understanding is that it helps when you don't have cell coverage. That's a T-Mobile thing for the most part, unless you live in one of those areas that NO carrier reaches, but you'd be less likely to have access to Wi-Fi there as well.

I know this post doesn't provide a T-Mobile solution, but lack of coverage and the need of Wi-Fi calling on T-Mobile is why I have stuck with a different carrier.
