Why isn't gmail compatible with Google Chrome?

I have heard that gmail and Google Chrome aren't compatible. Every time I try to open my gmail in google chrome I get a message that they aren't compatible.

Ummm... I don't think that is correct. They are both Google Products and billions use them in conjunction daily.

What device? What OS and version? Has it always been this way? Did it just start? If it is a recent development, what changed just when this started?

Can you reprint exactly, word for word, what error message you receive including any codes?
