Why won't my Nokia Lumia tell me when I have a text message?

My nokia lumia won't tell me when I have a text message

The phone receives and sends messages fine, but when I receive a text, it doesn't show that I have a new text on the icon. If I go into my messages, it shows the new text, just doesn't register in the little icon so therefore my alert doesn't go off.

Re-pin it. Try soft reset too

Go to setting notifications and turn messaging notifications on
